Quick answer: Sewage cleanup in Laurel, MD, means safely removing sewer water, tearing out porous materials it soaked, disinfecting every surface and drying the space. Sewage is Category 3 water, the most contaminated class. Keep people and pets out, stop using water in the house and call for same-day cleanup.
Sewer backups usually show up in the lowest drain: a basement floor drain, a lower-level toilet or a shower. Heavy rain can overload old sewer pipes, and roots, grease or wipes can block a home's line. Laurel Dry Pros removes the waste and makes the space safe again.

- Protect people. We set containment, wear protective gear and keep foot traffic out.
- Remove the waste. Pumps and extractors remove sewage water and solids.
- Tear out porous materials. Carpet, pad, drywall and insulation that sewage touched are removed, usually with a flood cut above the water line.
- Clean. Floors, framing and hard surfaces are scrubbed.
- Disinfect. An antimicrobial is applied to all affected surfaces.
- Dry. Dehumidifiers and air movers dry the structure. We keep a drying log.
- Deodorize and verify. Odor is treated and we confirm the area is clean and dry before rebuild.
Why sewage is treated differently
The ANSI/IICRC S500 standard rates sewage as Category 3, or black water. That rating changes what can be saved. Clean water damage often lets us dry carpet and drywall in place. With sewage, porous materials soak up contamination that cleaning can't reach, so they are removed. Hard, non-porous surfaces like tile, concrete and metal can be cleaned and disinfected.
Health agencies advise keeping children, older adults and anyone with a weak immune system away from sewage cleanup. Wash hands well, and don't eat or drink in the area.
Equipment for sewage jobs

| Extractor | Pulls remaining water from floors. |
| HEPA air scrubber | Filters air during tear-out. |
| Containment sheeting | Keeps contamination out of clean rooms. |
| Antimicrobial sprayer | Applies disinfectant to all surfaces. |
| Dehumidifiers and air movers | Dry the structure after cleaning. |

DIY vs. calling a pro
Only tackle it yourself if the spill is small, on a hard floor and you have gloves, eye protection and disinfectant. Call a pro if sewage reached carpet or drywall, covers more than a small area, or came up through a floor drain. Our guide to sewage backup cleanup walks through the safe first steps.

The City of Laurel and the Prince George's and Montgomery County towns we serve get sewer service from WSSC Water. Homes in Howard and Anne Arundel counties, such as Columbia, Fulton and Odenton, are served by their county public works departments. WSSC Water says the homeowner is responsible for the private sewer service, except the actual connection to its main. WSSC recommends a WSSC-registered plumber to clear backups. If the blockage turns out to be in the part WSSC maintains, WSSC clears it at no charge, and property damage can go through its Claims Office. Its emergency line is listed on wsscwater.com.
For insurance, the Maryland Insurance Administration explains that sewage backups are covered only with a water/sewer backup endorsement. Many policies won't cover repair of the pipe itself.
Local note: Older neighborhoods in Greenbelt and Silver Spring have aging sewer laterals that are prone to root blockages. Homes with basement bathrooms and ejector pumps in Beltsville can back up when a pump fails.
Sewage Cleanup questions
Is a sewage backup an emergency?
Yes. Sewage can carry bacteria, viruses and parasites. Stop using water in the house, keep children and pets away and call for cleanup the same day.
Can I clean up sewage myself?
A small toilet overflow on tile can be cleaned with gloves, eye protection and disinfectant. Sewage that soaked carpet, drywall or spread across a basement needs professional removal and disinfection.
Who is responsible for a sewer backup in Laurel?
It depends on where the blockage is. In the WSSC Water area, which covers the City of Laurel, the homeowner usually owns the private sewer line up to the connection with the public main. WSSC Water and a registered plumber can determine whose side the blockage is on.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewage backup?
Only if you bought a water/sewer backup endorsement. Maryland insurers must offer it, but it isn't automatic. Check your declarations page.
What has to be thrown away after a sewage backup?
Porous items that sewage touched, like carpet, pad, upholstered furniture, mattresses, drywall and insulation, usually can't be safely cleaned. Hard items like tile, metal and sealed wood can often be disinfected.
How can I prevent another backup?
Don't flush wipes or pour grease down drains. Have tree roots cleared from your line. Ask a plumber about a backflow valve on the main line.
